Prayer is central to the Christian faith. Prayer changes people's lives!

What Jesus said...

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18.20)

What St Paul wrote...“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18)

Below are some suggestions to help develop our prayer life:

Praying the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven

Express your thanks that Almighty God is your loving Father

Hallowed be Thy name

Praise God for all he is. Pray that others might acknowledge this

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

Pray for the whole world to be brought in line with God’s purposes

Give us this day our daily bread

Pray for your own needs, your family, the needs of the church and wider world

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us

Confess your sins, and the sins of the church and world. Forgive those who’ve hurt you

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil

Pray for strength to live God’s way

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

Look forward to the day when Jesus will return and take you ‘home’ to Glory

Pray for Five

Praying for others to know Jesus is one of the most powerful things we can do; persistent prayer for others brings transformation to their lives. Consistently praying for others takes discipline, and there are many ways that we can build up habits that will help us to pray for our friends and family.

Choose five people you would regularly like to pray for and write their names down onto a list. If you’re not sure who to pray for, ask God to guide you as you choose. Once you have settled on 5 names, commit to praying for them regularly.

Ideas to help you remember to pray:

1. Tie five knots in a piece of string. Carry it around in your pocket

2. Write the names of 5 people on five pebbles. Place on your desk, table etc.

3. Write the name of 5 people on a small card and place in your purse

4. Add alerts to pray for your five people on your phone

5. Stick named post-it notes on your bedroom mirror

Prayers to use when praying for others:

Loving Father, send your Holy Spirit so I can share your love, life and message with… Reveal Jesus to them, that they might know, follow and love him, For Your Glory, Amen.

Lord, I pray that you will lead… to you. Thank you that you love them and I pray that you would break into their life and show them your love, grace and peace. For Your Glory, Amen .

Using the BLESS acrostic can help us to focus on all of the felt needs of those we are praying for:

Body – health, protection, energy

Labour – employment/unemployment, retirement, adequate income

Emotional – inner peace, joy, wisdom, insight, patience

Social – healthy relationships between spouses, parents, children, friends

Spiritual – repentance, salvation, obedience, faith
